Will P0463 clear itself?
It may disappear temporarily, but the underlying fault may still be present.
If the fuel-level sender, wiring, or connector has an intermittent problem:
- The signal may temporarily return to the expected range.

- P0463 may return when the same fault condition occurs again.
For example, refueling may move the float away from a problem area and temporarily restore a normal signal.

Does topping off the gas tank cause P0463?
No. Topping off the tank does not normally cause P0463 by itself.

Why Does P0463 Come Back After You Clear It?

Clearing the code can:
- Remove stored diagnostic information

But clearing the code does not repair:
- A worn fuel-level sender
- Damaged wiring
- A poor electrical connection
- A damaged or sticking float

If P0463 repeatedly returns: Treat the recurrence as diagnostic evidence and inspect the fuel-level circuit rather than repeatedly clearing the code.
Why Won't a Permanent P0463 Code Clear?
A Permanent P0463 DTC generally cannot be manually erased simply by selecting "Clear Codes" on a scan tool.
A permanent DTC is normally removed only after:
- The underlying fault has been repaired.
- The vehicle completes the required diagnostic monitor.
- The system confirms that the fault is no longer present.
Therefore:
- Stored P0463: May be cleared with a compatible scanner.
- Permanent P0463: May remain until the vehicle successfully verifies the repair.
What to do: Repair the underlying fault, allow the required drive conditions and monitors to run, and then rescan the vehicle.
Repeatedly clearing codes or disconnecting the battery is not a substitute for repairing the underlying problem.
